Menstruation can have an impact on athletic performance for some women, although the extent of this impact can vary from person to person. Some women may experience discomfort, cramping, and fatigue during their menstrual cycle, which can affect their ability to perform at their best.
However, with proper preparation and management, women can participate in sports events during menstruation. Here are some tips:
- Plan ahead: Track your menstrual cycle and plan your sports events accordingly. If you have a particularly heavy flow or experience severe cramps, you may want to avoid scheduling intense events during this time.
- Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help reduce bloating and cramping during your period.
- Manage pain: Use over-the-counter pain relief medication or heat therapy to manage cramps or discomfort.
- Wear appropriate clothing: Choose comfortable and breathable clothing, and consider using period-specific sports gear like menstrual underwear or a menstrual cup.
- Take breaks: Listen to your body and take breaks when needed. Rest and relaxation can help reduce stress and fatigue, which can be exacerbated during menstruation.
- Wear an extra layer of protections such as spandex shorts.
- Protect your teammate, if your teammate has bleed through their uniform let them know and get them to the locker room for clean up. Also if they need a product, give a product. This is why having extra uniforms and products on hand is important.
Overall, women can absolutely participate in sports events during menstruation with the right preparation and management. It’s important to prioritize your health and well-being, and to talk to your doctor if you have any concerns. At GHP our mission is to make sure that menstruating athletes don’t have to miss out of sports due to their menstrual cycle. This support is awesome!! Sometimes girls tend to shy away from sports because of certain issues and bringing the solution to them and their coaches is amazing!
